What To Expect

Tattoo Removal Cost Calculator

A ballpark cost for your tattoo removal in just a few clicks.

Removal pricing is quoted per session which makes it almost impossible to budget for until you know how many sessions you’re in for. This tool does the multiplication. Just pick your tattoo’s size and its colors. For how we came up with our numbers, see below.

Cost Estimator

Estimate your removal cost

Pick your tattoo’s size and colors for a ballpark range. Color matters more than people expect, because stubborn inks need more sessions to clear.

Tattoo size
Colors in the tattoo
Estimated total range
$1,500 – $4,000
Based on about 5–8 sessions at $300–$500 each.

This is a rough estimate from national pricing research, and it isn’t a quote. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports a higher national average than most other sources do, which is one reason this tool shows a range. Your real cost depends on your tattoo, your skin, and your provider, so only an in-person consultation gives an exact price.

What actually drives the cost

Size sets the per-session price
Small under 2 in $150–$300
Medium 2 to 6 in $300–$500
Large 6 to 10 in $500–$800
Extra large 10 in+ $800+
Color sets the number of sessions
Black only 5–8 sessions
Black + some color 7–10 sessions
Multicolor 9–12 sessions

Based on national pricing research. Individual costs vary.

Two things move the price, and they work differently. Size sets what one session costs, climbing from around $150 for something small toward several hundred for a large piece. Color barely touches that number. What color changes is how many sessions you need, which caught us off guard when we first dug into the pricing. Black absorbs every laser wavelength well and clears fastest. Greens, blues, and yellows resist the common ones and take noticeably longer. Since the total is the per-session price multiplied by the session count, a stubborn palette can push the final cost well past what the size alone suggests.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons puts the average session near $700, while most other sources land closer to $200 to $500. Figures like these move around depending on where you go and when they were gathered, which is why this tool gives a range. Your own cost comes down to things no calculator can see: how deep the ink sits, how your skin responds, and what a provider charges near you. The only way to get an exact number is to have someone look at your actual tattoo.

A note on this guide

Tattoo Takeoff is an independent, research-based resource. It is not a clinic and does not perform removal, and nothing here is medical advice. These figures are estimates drawn from national pricing research, so the only way to know what your own removal will cost is to talk with a qualified, licensed provider about your specific tattoo.
